Muriel Elizabeth Bowser is an American politician serving since 2015 as the mayor of the District of Columbia. A member of the Democratic Party, she previously represented the 4th ward as a member of the Council of the District of Columbia from 2007 to 2015.

In May 2018, Bowser announced that she had adopted a baby whom she named Miranda Elizabeth Bowser, after her eldest sister.

Bowser was the first single mother to serve as the mayor of the District of Columbia. The politician started the adoption process at 44. She stated the following about her adoption journey during an interview with WUSA9.

I decided to start the adoption journey, knowing it was a great time in my life, and I had so much to share with a baby. I am looking forward to pouring a lot of love, attention, and affection into a baby and helping the baby grow into a wonderful Washingtonian.

It is with great joy and excitement that I share with you that I decided to begin the adoption journey late last year. I was unsure how long it would take, and to my delight, it advanced much sooner than I expected. So today, I am proud to announce that I am a mom!

Bowser was the youngest of six children born to her parents Joe Bowser and Joan Bowser. Her father Joe is a facilities manager for D.C. public schools, and her mother Joan is a nurse.

Bowser has five siblings, four are identified as three brothers and a sister namely Marvin, Martin, Mark, and Mercia. Her closest sibling was Mark, who was 10 when she was born. Marvin and Martin are twins and were close to starting high school when she was born. The oldest sibling is Mercia and was getting ready to apply to college when she was born.

Unfortunately, Mercia died of COVID-19 on February 24, 2021, and Mayor Bowser wrote, “Mercia was loved immensely and will be missed greatly, as she joins the legion of angels who have gone home too soon due to the pandemic.”
