Michael Redd grew up in Ohio where he went to high school, and later at the Ohio State University. He was the leading basketball player at the college and managed to average around 20 points per game in three years. Redd led Ohio State to the NCAA Final Four in 1999, while in the 2000 NBA Draft, the Milwaukee Bucks selected him as the 43rd pick in the second round.
Redd struggled to make an impact playing behind the All-Star shooting guard Ray Allen in the pecking order, but then the head coach George Karl gave him an opportunity, and Redd took it.
Already in his sophomore season, Michael improved and averaged 11.4 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 21.1 minutes per game. He set the NBA record for the most three-pointers made in a quarter after he bagged eight in the final quarter against the Houston Rockets. That record stood for 13 years until Klay Thompson broke it with nine threes. At the beginning of the 2002-03 season, Redd received a $12 million offer from the Dallas Mavericks and accepted it, but the Bucks reacted quickly and matched the offer, so he remained with Milwaukee. Midway through that season, the Bucks traded Ray Allen, and the starting shooting guard position was Redd’s for taking. His numbers improved and he finished the campaign with 15.1 points per game.
Michael became a full starter in the 2003-04 season ,and excelled averaging 21.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.0 steals, and 36.8 minutes in starting all 82 matches, securing his only invite to the All-Star game. He also made it into the All-NBA Third Team, but the Bucks failed to get further than the opening round of the playoffs. Redd’s scoring numbers continued to improve in the coming years, while at the end of the 2004-05 season, he refused an opportunity to join LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers for less money and accepted the six-year $91 million deal to stay in Milwaukee instead. Redd has his best season ever in 2006-07 when he averaged 26.7 points per game and also won a gold medal at the FIBA Americas Championship in Las Vegas.
In 2008, Michael was a part of the US national team that won gold at the Olympics in Beijing, but in January 2009, he suffered devastating ACL and MCL injuries in his left knee, and was forced to miss the rest of the season after appearing in only 18 games. He returned against the Lakers, but re-injured the same knee in January 2009 and missed the rest of that season also.
Redd was never the same player again, although he went on to play just ten matches for the Bucks in the 2010-11 season. In December 2011, Redd signed a one-year contract with the Phoenix Suns, and received standing ovations when returned to Milwaukee, scoring 14 points in a victory over the Bucks. He ended the season with 8.2 points and 15.1 minutes on average in 51 games for the Suns, after which he decided to retire from playing.
Regarding his personal life, Michael Redd has been married to Achea Redd since 2006. Redd is a devoted Christian and even bought the church for his minister father called Philadelphia Deliverance Church of Christ in Columbus, Ohio.
