As another scary scene unfolded involving the Bills during their game against the Giants on Sunday night at Highmark Stadium, NBC cut to a long shot of Damar Hamlin.
Bills running back Damien Harris left the field in an ambulance – which featured Hamlin’s jersey on the back doors – during the second quarter of Buffalo’s 14-9 win.
The scene was similar to January when Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest while making a tackle during a “Monday Night Football” game against the Bengals.
As medical workers attended to Harris on the field and loaded him onto a stretcher, Hamlin, who was inactive, sat with his head down while he seemingly rubbed his eyes.
Hamlin was clearly emotional during the sad scene.
“Especially after last year, anytime the ambulance has to come on the field, it brings PTSD,” Bills offensive tackle Dion Dawkins said, per The Athletic. “It’s hard. It’s really hard, man.
“I hate to say it like this, but before every game starts in this league, you have to hug your loved ones just a little bit closer. You really never know.”
Harris suffered his injury on a rushing play after he collided with Giants linebacker Bobby Okereke. An ambulance eventually came onto the field for Harris.
The veteran flashed his thumbs up as he was loaded into the ambulance to be taken to a local hospital, and the Bills public relations account tweeted that Harris had movement in his arms and legs.
“Things are heading in a good direction right now for Damien,” Bills head coach Sean McDermott said.
The scary situation involved memories of Hamlin’s life-threatening situation earlier this year that has served as an inspiration to many.
The Bills’ new-look ambulance honoring Hamlin provided a nice touch on an otherwise rough night that brought back bad memories.
Hamlin did not suit up for Sunday’s game, the fifth time he’s been inactive this year. He has only appeared in the Bills 48-20 loss to the Dolphins on Oct. 1.
“What happened last year doesn’t prepare you any more,” Dawkins said, according to The Athletic. “It’s just tough, and it’s sad.
“Any moment, that can be it.”
